Immigrants were welcome, and so were rain coats and umbrellas, at Thursday evening’s May Day Rally and March in Downtown Pittsburgh.

While approaching storms pushed some of the rally inside the United Steelworkers Building, the parade hit the streets as planned as part of the annual event, organized by the Pittsburgh Chapters of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement and Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance.

In inviting immigrants, union members, workers and community allies, LCLAA President Jessica Ríos Viner said, “This May Day, we’re sending a clear message: Immigrants and workers deserve justice, equality and opportunity. We are stronger together, and together, we can create a future built on fairness and dignity for all no matter your birthplace, ethnicity or language.”

May 1 International Workers Day also will be marked on Saturday by Indivisible Pittsburgh and its local partners, who are joining organizations across the country in “demanding a country that puts our families over their fortunes — public schools over private profits, health care over hedge funds, housing over homelessness.”

That “Feet in the Street” rally will happen from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the City-County Building, Downtown. Here are the details.

Meanwhile, here are some more photos from Thursday by Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh striker Randy Stoernell.
