In celebration of National Carousel Day Friday, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is inviting families, park lovers and carousel enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy free rides on the PNC Carousel in Schenley Plaza.
This annual celebration recognizes “the timeless joy carousels bring to communities across the country,” according to a conservancy news release. For one day only, all rides on the PNC Carousel — which features hand-painted animals including a camel, an elephant, a giraffe, an ostrich and a seahorse — are available to the public at no charge Friday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
National Carousel Day, celebrated each year on July 25, marks the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for the modern carousel granted in 1871. It’s a day to honor the history, craftsmanship and nostalgic charm of carousels that have brought joy to generations, the release stated.
Since opening in 2006, the PNC Carousel has welcomed hundreds of thousands of riders and continues to serve as a centerpiece in Oakland’s Schenley Plaza.
Schenley Plaza is located at4100 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213
