If it wasn’t clear earlier, it certainly should be now — the Beaver boys are for real.

Less than two weeks after nearly pulling off a stunning upset in a two-point loss to Lincoln Park, the Bobcats handed Class 6A contender Norwin (6-1) its first loss this season Wednesday with a 60-52 win in Day 1 of the Peters Township/USC tournament. After beating the Knights at Peters Township, Beaver (7-1) will have a quick turnaround Thursday against Peters Township at Upper St. Clair.

The Bobcats have not finished above .500 since the 2012-13 season, but second-year coach Casey Kaiser has them thinking big.

“I knew this group would be special. I didn’t know how special, because on paper, it doesn’t matter until you execute,” Kaiser said. “I was confident we would take a big step this year. We’re a few steps ahead of where I thought we would be, but the door is busted open, and we can’t put it back.”

Brady Mayo had a quiet night by his standards with only 9 points, but Ty Butler and Aiden Townsend picked up the slack with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Adam Bilinsky led all scorers with 26 points for Norwin, which had four players hit three or more 3-pointers.

“These guys are battle-tested. We just had to keep countering them and hit them with some inside game,” Kaiser said. “It’s good for these guys to see that as a [Class] 4A school, to compete at the [Class] 6A level and see where we truly are as a program.”

Other boys games

• Upper St. Clair cruised past host Peters Township (6-2) with a 68-52 triumph in the featured matchup at the Peters Township/USC tournament. The Panthers (5-4) got 20 points from Julian Dahlem and 17 from Nick Sukernek.

• Most teams would be lucky to score 74 points in a game, but Uniontown (8-1) achieved the feat in the first half of its 109-49 dismantling of Waynesburg (2-9). The Red Raiders scored 37 points in each of the first two quarters and four players reached double figures in scoring, led by Jeremiah Hager with 20 points.

• Vinnie Cugini turned in another stellar performance in his pursuit of the WPIAL’s all-time scoring record, recording a game-high 43 points for Aquinas Academy (6-0) in an 84-76 win against Trinity Christian.

Bethel Park’s Nick Brown goes up for a shot against South Fayette Wednesday at North Allegheny. South Fayette defeated Bethel Park, 66-61. (Matt Freed/Pittsburgh Union Progress).

Girls games

• Katie Luccarelli was on fire from beyond the arc for Baldwin (4-6), converting seven 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 25 points in a 54-52 win against North Hills (4-6).

• Quinn Borroni brought her best stuff for Blackhawk (6-0) against Hoover, Ohio, scoring a game-high 28 points to go along with 21 from Alena Fusetti in a 59-39 win for the Cougars.

• Tiffany Zelmore has established herself as one of the most consistent players in the WPIAL and a legitimate contender to earn the scoring title, and she proved it once again with 37 points for Mount Pleasant (8-2) in a 53-39 win against Uniontown (0-9).
