As district high school football teams keep their dreams of PIAA gold alive heading into this weekend’s state semifinal games Friday and Saturday, a new crop of athletes is ready to begin the championship quest.

Basketball season gets underway Friday and continues until the WPIAL crowns its champions Feb. 29-March 2, setting the stage for another run at PIAA gold. There promises to be plenty of intriguing bounces along the way, and the Pittsburgh Union Progress will be there for every rebound and assist.

For the first time in more than 20 years, a WPIAL boy’s team will open the season ranked nationally, while at least one WPIAL girl’s team has won a state title each of the past five seasons (not including the 2020 COVID one). Will the streak continue this season?

Find out beginning Thursday when the PUP unveils its boys and girls high school basketball previews, with top teams in each class and players to watch. Then lace up the high tops and start stretching those hamstrings as the 2023-24 season tips off this weekend.
