Only one team has been able to figure out Latrobe this season.

Since seeing their perfect start come to a halt with a home loss to Uniontown on Dec. 17, the Wildcats had won 10 consecutive games heading into the week.

Latrobe got a second crack at the Red Raiders on Tuesday, and once again Uniontown got the best of the Wildcats.

Calvin Winfrey scored 20 points and Notorious Grooms added 16 to lead host Uniontown to a 64-45 win against Latrobe in a Class 5A Section 1 contest.

With the win, Uniontown (14-3, 9-0) took a two-game lead atop the section standings with five section games remaining. The Red Raiders earned at least a share of a section title the previous two seasons. Latrobe (15-2, 7-2), meanwhile, faces an uphill battle in its quest to win its first section title since 2019.

“We told the kids this gives us a two-game lead and puts us in very good shape even though we have some more games to play,” Uniontown coach Rob Kezmarsky said. “They were 15-1. They have a really good program. If they beat us, we would have still been tied for the section lead, but we want to win the section and want to win it as fast as we can so we can focus on the playoffs.”

Uniontown, which thumped Latrobe, 81-53, in the earlier meeting, held just a 21-19 lead in the second quarter Tuesday before outscoring the Wildcats, 12-3, over the final 4:19 of the first half to take a 33-22 halftime lead. Sophomore Cam Dugan came off the bench and sparked the run by knocking down a 3-pointer and following it by completing an and-one just over a minute later. Dugan finished with 8 points.

“Cam right now is handling the basketball and playing defense. He’s a split starter with Ayden Kiefer, but the next two years he’s going to be a 20-point scorer. He’s scored all of his life, but on this team he just doesn’t get many shots,” Kezmarsky said.

Latrobe never got back within single-digits the rest of the way, and Uniontown stretched its lead to as big as 20 points in the fourth quarter when Winfrey accounted for 9 of his points. The Red Raiders also got 11 points in the game from Kelan Milsom.

John Wetzel led Latrobe with 15 points, while Ian DeCerb added 14 points and Max Butler 12.
