The winner is … Ocho!  That name choice bested five other contenders in a fundraising contest to name USS 8, the 5-week-old U.S. Steel Mon Valley Irvin Works bald eaglet.

Steel City Eagles made the announcement Thursday on the group’s Facebook page. Plant Manager Don German confirmed that 121 supporters entered the contest and contributed $5,719. Proceeds benefit the Tamarack Wildlife Center, located in Saegertown, which helped Rosie, the U.S. Steel fledgling who fell from the mill nest site in 2022 and damaged her flight and tail feathers

USS 8 hatched on March 27. It is growing and eating well, thanks to its doting parents. A U.S. Steel Pix Cam video Friday captured mom Stella bringing a large catfish for her little one.
