Roadwork restrictions return this week after taking a pause most places for the U.S. Open golf tournament in Oakmont last week and over the weekend. Here’s what to expect:
- Parkway East – The closure of one outbound lane before the Squirrel Hill Tunnel returns from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday while crews build a retaining wall outside the far end of the tunnel as part of the replacement of the Commercial Street Bridge. The Beechwood Boulevard on-ramp as well as the right lane and shoulder of the highway will be closed from the ramp to the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange. Detours will be posted. Crews are building the new bridge in Frick Park under the bridge and will slide it into place in July 2026 as part of a $95 million project.
- McKnight Road – Single-lane restrictions will be in place as needed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday this week while crews do concrete curb work between Venture Street on Pittsburgh’s North Side and Perrymont Road in McCandless. The work is part of a $27 million project that will finish this summer.
- Parkway West – Work on three aspects of a project in Collier and Robinson will begin Monday and cause restrictions from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Single-lane restrictions will occur in both directions on the highway bridges above Boyce Road as needed through late October while crews conduct barrier, inlet, signage and paving work. Additionally, traffic will be reduced to a single lane from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday while crews implement a new traffic pattern that will shift traffic in each direction between the Ridge Road and Interstate 79 interchanges, where motorists will use two 11-foot outer lanes until early August while crews work on a bridge and the median barrier. And bridge work will begin at 9 p.m. Monday that will close these ramps until mid-September: from Boyce Road to the inbound Parkway West and outbound from the Parkway West to the Campbells Run Road exit. Detours will be posted.
- Ewing Road – The road will be closed between Route 51 and Katharine Lane in Stowe from 7 a.m. Monday through July 11 while crews repair a landslide. In addition, temporary traffic signals will be installed on southbound Route 51 near Ewing to allow the work to occur. Detours will be posted.
- Route 28 – Work will resume in O’Hara this week as crews install conduit for a wrong-way warning system between Pittsburgh’s North Side and Harmar. Work will cause shoulder restrictions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the northbound and southbound ramps to RIDC Drive. When the $4.8 million project is finished next spring, drivers who go the wrong way on the highway will trigger flashing lights and signs to warn the driver and notify the Western Regional Traffic Management Center.
- Route 8 – Single-lane restrictions will continue during nonpeak times Monday through Friday through late July on Butler Street between the 62nd Street Bridge and Baker Street in Pittsburgh. The work will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Milling and paving will begin Monday. The work is part of a $9.1 million project to improve Route 8 from Pittsburgh to Shaler that should conclude by the end of the year.
- 40th Street Bridge – The bridge across the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh will have a single-lane restriction from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday while it is inspected.
