More than 2½ years after an emergency closure due to advanced deterioration, a new bridge opened Tuesday over Dolphin Run in South Fayette.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced the $1.9 million bridge on Millers Run Road has been completed. The old bridge, which already was rated in poor condition, was closed immediately in December 2022 after inspectors found a “drastic change” from the previous inspection two years earlier, PennDOT bridge engineer Steve Szalankiewicz said at the time.

Pugliano Construction Co. began work on the new bridge between Mohawk and Battle Ridge roads on March 25. A temporary structure had opened in early 2023.

The replacement project also included milling and paving the approach roadway, improving drainage and guiderails, and marking the pavement. Minor rock slope work will continue on the stream with intermittent traffic restrictions.

Before the closure, the bridge carried about 3,900 vehicles a day.
